
The year is 1886.
Grover Cleveland is president, the Statue of Liberty is unveiled, the very first glass of Coca-Cola is served at a pharmacy in Atlanta, you can snag a dozen eggs for 35 cents, and in Danville, Virginia, the Davis Tobacco Warehouse was built.
The expansive warehouse was designed to store and display tobacco in a unique way that allowed buyers to easily inspect and purchase it. This novel idea became known as the “Danville System," and made Danville a major marketing hub for tobacco, with a network of warehouses and factories covering nearly 40 blocks.

As we see time and again, times change, buildings age, and even historic structures like this one eventually reach the point where they can no longer be preserved or repurposed. When the decision was made for a developer to bring the Davis Tobacco Warehouse down, Southend Reclaimed stepped in to salvage its antique wood and brick before they were lost.
